Comedians love to crack jokes about the long lines at departments of motor vehicles (i.e. “You know what they should do? When you walk in the door, they should have somebody hiding just punch you in the face. ‘Cause at least after, you can be like, ‘Ah! All right, well, waiting in line’s not so bad after the punch in the face!’”), but these busy agencies, including those in Cobb County, Georgia, serve a vital function by providing citizens with drivers licensing issuance and renewals as well as other vehicle-related services. Some information about Cobb County is provided below followed by a description of the role of the Cobb County DMV.

Information about Cobb County

Created in 1832 and located in the northwestern section of George just north of Atlanta’s city limits, Cobb County is home to about 741,000 citizens living in a quarter million households, which makes it the third-most populous county in the state. With its county seat located in its largest city, Marietta, the county is named after a U.S. congressional representative and then senator, Thomas Willis Cobb (Marietta is believed to be named after his wife, Mary). The county contains about 345 square miles (with just about 4 square miles of water). The population of Cobb County is approximately two-thirds white, one-quarter African American, with small percentages of Native Americans, Asians and Pacific Islanders. Besides Marietta, other larger cities in Cobb County include Acworth, Austell, Kennesaw, Powder Springs and Smyrna.

Today, Cobb County has much to offer its residents and visitors alike, including a Major League Base Team, the Atlanta Braves, which play in Cumberland. Moreover, Cobb County is listed among the 100 wealthiest counties in the country and its population is considered the most highly educated in the state.  In fact, the Cobb County School District is the county’s largest employer with more than 15,000 employees. The county is also home to several highly regarded higher educational institutions, including Chattahoochee Technical College, Kennesaw State University and Life University. In addition, Cobb County features numerous recreational, cultural, and tourism destinations, including several in Marietta such as American Adventures, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, Six Flags White Water, Marietta Museum of History and the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art. Likewise, the Cobb County Department of Parks and Recreation operates and maintains several recreation centers and numerous youth and adult sports programs, aquatics programs and even therapeutic recreational opportunities for elder residents.

Role of the Cobb County DMV

Unlike many other counties in the United States, drivers licensing in Cobb County is the responsibility of the Georgia Department of Driver Services while the department of motor vehicles is a division of the Georgia Department of Revenue. The Cobb County Motor Vehicle Division is responsible for sending residents bills for ad valorem taxes as well as collecting and distributing these revenues for the following vehicle types:

The revenues collected by the Cobb County are then distributed to the Board of Education, Department of Revenue as well as all six cities in the county. The Cobb County Motor Vehicle Division is also tasked with operating license tag agencies for the Georgia Department of Revenue and therefore also enforces state and local laws concerning vehicle registration requirements, insurance, emission standards and the ownership of mobile homes including the collection of any fees related to these laws and regulations.

To make things faster and easier for Cobb County residents, the Motor Vehicle Department also offers a “self-serve tag kiosk” that is available during normal business hours where applicants can renew as many as 10 vehicle registrations per transaction. In order to use the kiosk, residents must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Vehicle(s) must be registered in a participating county;
  • Applicants must have a valid Georgia State driver’s license;
  • The address must be correct on the renewal notice;
  • Applicants must have proof of liability insurance on file (if applicable); and,
  • Applicants must have a Vehicle Emission Inspection on file (if applicable).

The Cobb County Motor Vehicle Department also provides an online instructional video concerning how to use their self-serve kiosks as well as a 24/7 secure drop-off for applications at the Main Office listed above; all applications received at the secure drop-off receive priority treatment the next business day.

Conclusion

As the most highly educated and affluent counties in the state of Georgia, Cobb County residents clearly place a high priority on the finer things in life, including abundant recreational and cultural activities and a modern department of motor vehicles. The numerous locations maintained by the Cobb County Motor Vehicle Department make is an easy matter for residents to take care of their license tag renewals, vehicle registration and other legal matters involving personal and commercial motor vehicles as well as motor homes.
