Fulton County Schools is the public school board the oversees schools in Fulton County, Georgia. Fulton County Schools is divided into several divisions: Academics; the Fulton County Board of Education; Financial Services; Human Resources/Talent; Information Technology; Internal Audit; Operations; Strategy and Innovation; and the Office of the Superintendent. Working together, these divisions operate Fulton County Public Schools.
The current superintendent of Fulton County Schools is Dr. Jeff Rose. Dr. Rose joined Fulton County Schools as its Superintendent of Schools in June 2016. The position is not an elected position; the superintendent is selected by the Fulton County Board of Education.
The Fulton County Board of Education includes seven members elected by district to serve four-year terms. These members are not employees of the school system, except the Superintendent who serves as an ex-officio member of the Board and acts as Secretary-Treasurer. Board members elect a President for a two-year term and a Vice President for a one-year term. Current board members include: Katha Stuart in District 1; Katie Reeves in District 2; Gail Dean in District 3; Linda Bryant, President in District 4; Linda McCain, Vice President in District 5; Kimberly Dove in District 6; Julia Bernath in District 7; and Superintendent Rose.
The primary duty of the Board of Education is to enact and enforce educational policies in Fulton County. To do this the board handles a number of different roles including: reviewing and establishing curriculum; making personnel recommendations; approving the budget for the school district; providing funds for the operation and support of the school system; setting operational standards for the schools and the district; approving school boundaries; and acting as a tribunal at employee and student hearings.
Fulton County is the largest county in Georgia. It is located in the north-central portion of the state. As of 2015, the population of Fulton County was estimated at 1,010,562. The county seat of Fulton is Atlanta; and most of Atlanta is within Fulton County. Fulton County is in the Atlanta Metropolitan area and the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Fulton County School System was founded in 1871 and is one of the oldest and largest school districts in Georgia. It is Georgia’s largest school systems in terms of geographic area, spanning more than 70 miles from north to south.
Although Atlanta is the largest city in Fulton County, most of Atlanta is serviced by its own school system and Board of Education. Therefore, even if you live in Fulton County, you may not attend a Fulton County School. Most students in Fulton County Schools live in either the southern or northern parts of the school system, which is bisected by the city of Atlanta. The southern part of Fulton County is comprised of the cities of Chattahoochee Hills, the City of South Fulton, College Park, East Point, Fairburn, Hapeville, Palmetto, South Fulton and Union City. The northern part is home to the cities of Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Mountain Park, Roswell, and Sandy Springs.
Fulton County Schools is the fourth largest school system in Georgia. It has more than 14,000 full-and part-time employees. These employees include more than 7,500 teachers and other certified personnel. The district has 105 schools and administrative and support buildings. Projected enrollment for the 2017-18 school year is approximately 96,700 students. Fulton County Schools include: 59 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 18 high schools (includes two open campus high schools), and ten charter organizations (some charters have multiple campuses but are considered one school).
The Fulton County Schools system is supported by the Fulton Education Foundation. The Fulton Education Program is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization designed to enhance the performance and lives of Fulton County students and faculty.
Fulton County Schools are dedicated to the concept of individualized learning for students, based on the belief that not all students learn in the same manner. This individualized approach allows students to customize some aspects of their learning experience and includes open campuses, online learning, and a number of charter school opportunities. Academic Departments in the Fulton County Schools System include: Assessments; Learning and Teaching; Learning Communities; Personalized Learning; and Student Support Services.
Fulton County Schools has been the state’s largest charter school system since 2012.
